You will savor the first whiff of the scent, it is multilayered and mysterious - it morphs from the top citrusy notes of wild orange and bergamot, to the warm, musky, and firey aroma of Tulsi. The cleansing scent of lavender is held in the fresh piney balsamic notes of wild cypress. The depths of the earthy and spicy roots of angelica’s fragrance draw you in, as the Tulsi, Holy Basil, surrounds you, clarifying and invigorating your whole being while wrapping you in relaxation and peace. These energetic plant signatures create an elixir on Earth while they soar through all the realms, bringing them together, inviting integration.

Liminal moments are mirrored within Nature’s landscapes and language - the times at dawn and dusk, when daybreaks and twilight lingers on the horizon. We sense these In-Between Places as liminal space – when we approach a crossing, entering the woodlands or forest, gazing at the mist just beyond the water’s edge. . . In these moments we sense the betwixt and between, the unseen, and the mystery.

Liminal space can be a gateway for many of our life’s thresholds and transitions. Life is an initiation that sometimes invites us, gently or fiercely, into terrains that are foreign to us. The in-between space can be a simple moment in the day or a major life transition. We may be going about the ordinary tasks of the day, the seasonal shifting cycles, beginning or ending a marriage, a career, an illness, a move, children leaving the nest, or grieving the loss of loved ones. During these moments we leave behind who we were and are not yet who we are becoming.

Taking a breath of Liminal Spaces is grounding, calming, soothing, and uplifting. The scent wraps us in comfort and courage. These ancient plant allies can guide us through the magical wonders of liminal spaces and support us when we meet painful and challenging life transitions. The aliveness of this scent awakens our senses and helps us navigate the myriad of unforeseen emotions and experiences these crossings may encompass.

The guardians and gatekeepers of these plant allies come together to encourage us on our journey into the unknown. Guiding us to turn inward at these thresholds to listen to our inner voice and intuition – feeling the messages we receive with curiosity and gratitude in our bones.

We are drawn into a passageway, following the scent . . .we pause and linger. We become present, dwelling in the moment, and resting with the unknown.

Letting go and embracing this numinous space can be unfamiliar and uncomfortable. We are usually focused on doing something, but there is nothing to do here. When we surrender to the tenderness, the unknowable nature of our becoming, we will step over the threshold and begin to inhabit our new beginning.

This alchemical blend honors the Gatekeepers and Guardians who protect these thresholds and guide our safe passage when we are ready for the crossing.

Liminal Spaces Anointing Practice

We create a sacred space of prayer and renewal when we practice a daily anointing ritual. Through these alchemical scents, we are initiated into centuries of tradition and ceremony that align and attune our body/being with the plant’s ancestral wisdom.

Center yourself, pour a few drops into your palm, and gently rub your palms together. Ask for guidance or whatever you need from the Guardians and Gatekeepers or whatever way you speak to Spirit.

Bring your palms up to your face and take four deep, slow, soft inhalations – pause – then take deep, slow exhalations. Offer your gratitude for the life-giving ways and wisdom of these medicine gifts. You may anoint your forehead, heart, belly, wrists, and bottoms of your feet: wherever you intuit your body wishes to receive the plant medicines. Offer your appreciation and gratitude for their love, guidance, and support.

You can apply Liminal Spaces before entering moments of quietness: rituals and ceremonies, meditation, yoga nidra, dream work, or journeys.

During the in-between moments of the day when you may be feeling: uneasy, bewildered, afraid, frustrated, anxious, in pain, overwhelmed, or unsettled.

Before bedtime: preparing for sleep and dreamtime, or offering your gratitude for the gifts and lessons of the day.

Angelica the Doorkeeper

The falcon soars

The town's gates are even higher

Angelica's their doorkeeper

She's wound the sun round her head

She's tied the moon round her waist

She's hung herself with stars.

In-Between Places

We are in the Between Places, called ‘Idir Áit, in Gaelic. The Irish Ancestors would say this is an In-Between time of abundant light, as the days slowly wane toward darkness. We’re straddling one of the thresholds where life cycles are side by side, connected yet different. We sense the moments between Summer’s blossoming and the Autumn’s harvest. There is an ineffable threshold between the shift of seasons as we walk toward Autumn’s shedding, which is not quite here yet.

The In-Between Place is often described as a space between two borders: the In-Between Time that marks dawn, as the day begins, and just after dusk, before twilight. We are in the midst of a transition. A state of being that lies in the boundaries between the known and the unknown.

The journey through these transitions may be filled with the wonder and awe of the mystery, conversely, we may also be met by unexpected waves of sorrow and periods of grief. John O’Donohue, the Irish poet, reminds us of this fragile coexistence, “Think for a moment how, across the world, someone’s life just changed – irrevocably and permanently – and everything that once was so steady, so reliable, must now find a new way of unfolding.”
